Meet the Puppy

This dog was seen wandering and quickly posted in our volunteer’s neighborhood forum. Other neighbors continue to post when they saw him. We starting calling him Wandering Wally, and wondered where he’d go next. Wandering Wally clearly knew what he was doing, navigating his way straight to our volunteers home within a few days. For all you 80s cartoon fan lovers, he’s definitely part Care Bear, but we are deciding whether he’s Tenderheart or Funshine bear, or a healthy combo of both. He wants nothing more than your attention, your love, your presence, and will be a ridiculous goober to get it. He’s doesn’t understand size or volume control, and wants nothing more than to plop his giant head in your lap.

Temperament

We love Wally. He’s such a special dog, with a BIG personality, and we have loved getting to know him. He’s got a sweet and lovable temperament, is amazing with the kids in the house, gets along great with the other puppy and senior dog, and has given up tormenting the cats. He does take a little time to adjust to new places. When he first arrived in the home, he did growl a bit when sharing with the other dogs, or when the senior dog walked by his crate while he was eating. After a few days of settling in, the three were sharing their water bowls. He loves all people, and sometimes is a bit too loud announcing new visitor’s presence. We have opted to use the “kennel up” command, so he doesn’t intimidate those entering.

Wally has been with one of our experienced fosters, implementing good habits and foundation. We REQUIRE that Wally continues to work with one of recommended northern trainers, implementing a balanced training method. The first session is covered by us!

Those with balanced training experience, and prong/remote collar experience are preferred!

As an organization, we prefer balanced training over positive only, which is balanced between positive rewards, but also rules and structure to set boundaries. We are firm believers that the more rules you have for your dog when they are young, the more freedom they earn as they get older. So set down expectations and boundaries for your dog now with a trainer and the right tools, so they can be part of all the family fun!

Those who don’t believe in rules, routine, and structure for your dog, need not apply.

Needs

  • Kids. Wally needs kids in his regular life, whether it’s your kids, or nieces/nephews, or grand kids who frequent your home. He absolutely adores human children and is amazingly patient and curious about them. He tends to be their shadow, ready for pets whenever they are willing to give them.

  • Wally needs a bit of patience if being adopted in a dog family. He’s a little insecure around new dogs at first, but settles in quickly, and becomes everyone’s new best friend.

  • Wally needs dog friends, but the dog park will be too much personality for him. He’s better playing in small neighborhood groups or doggie day care.

  • Wally needs someone to know he is vocal. His bark is loud and intimidating, but it’s doesn’t come from anger or fear. He is like the town crier, announcing that you are home and asking for attention. He’s vocal when he plays too, making all sorts of snorts and grunts when he’s excited. For you Will and Grace fans out there, I’d compare him to Jack. Loud and PROUD!

  • Wally needs patience on the leash. He does pretty well walking, but still gets SUPER excited seeing other dogs. His excitement is a bit loud, so no one ever wants to play with him.

  • Wally is not suited for apartment living. He’s just too big and bulky, and needs space to be a goober. He needs a backyard. Between sunbathing, rolling around, and running around, this dog just loves having access outside. Fencing is not required.

  • Wally needs someone committed to crate training for bedtime and when the house is empty. We’ve worked hard to make if a happy place for him, and he now goes in himself when he’s tired, uncomfortable, or has had enough playing with his housemates.

  • Most importantly, Wally needs love and structure. It’s a balance of both that will bring out his true potential.

Crate/Potty Training

All puppies and dogs rescued by FAVOR are crate trained, sleeping in the crate from 9pm-6am, and accustomed to some day crate time as well. Puppies also understand the basic concept of peeing outside, but there is ALWAYS a transition period where crate cries and potty accidents WILL HAPPEN in a new home, as the dog transitions to new rules and ways to communicate.

We always recommend keeping dogs crated during nap times, bed time, and when they are alone to protect them from danger such as chewing on cords, socks, and other objects. Foreign objects can get stuck in their stomachs which can result in a very expensive surgery. We also encourage using the crate like a bedroom for your dogs as they get older, where they can take naps, take a break from human interaction, and have a time out. More importantly, the crate provides them a safe place to go to when things get overwhelming, like a lot of people, loud noises, extreme weather. Think of the crate as their “den,” and a place for them to unwind. We all need a break sometimes!
