Meet the Puppy

Duke has been with us for over a year! He was found roaming a local neighborhood. We did our best looking for his owners, but it appears that he was dumped intentionally. When we found Duke, his coat was unhealthy, he had some rotting and missing teeth, and he was heart worm positive. Treatment for heart worm in the south can only be administered during cooler months, because the heat index increases the chances of some gnarly side effects from the medication. So we had to wait until November to administer treatment, and then 90 days of treatment with limited activity, and then another 12 weeks of limited activity. But we are happy to say we know Duke REALLY well and he’s officially HEARTWORM NEGATIVE! Duke was fostered with a family with two kids (ages 2 and 6) and an adult dog, and he is now fostered with our director, a few adult dogs, cat, and foster puppies, and he thrived in both homes. Now he’s ready to find his fur-ever home.

Temperament

Duke wears his heart on his sleeves. He has such a nice and loving temperament. He’s dying to be someone’s shadow and bestie. He has all the patience in the world for kids, puppies, and adults who like to dress him up in costumes. He tends to ignore diva-dog-personalities, but might grumble under his breath if too much of a diva gets in his face. He’ll do just anything for belly rubs and chin scratches from anyone with willing hands. He’s a quite the Chatty Cathy during breakfast and dinner, just wanting to remind you to get his meal ready. He has a smidge of separation anxiety lingering, with a few jail break incidents with his crate, but we are happy to say he hasn’t broken out in six months.

Duke has done a session with our southern trainer, and was fostered with one of our more experienced fosters. We REQUIRE that Duke continues to work with one of recommended northern trainers, implementing a balanced training method. We have already started the foundational work of balanced training using a prong and Educator remote collar as communication tools. He has thrived in this type of training. The first session is covered by us!

Those not willing to continue this type of training, need not apply, and experience with prong/remote collar experience IS PREFERRED!

Needs

  • Duke needs a backyard. Between sunbathing, rolling around, and running around, this dog just loves having access outside. Fenced is preferred but not required, as Great Pyrenees tend to be wanderers.

  • Duke needs consistent daily routine. He’ll thrive in an environment that consists of the same walk every morning, the same trail in the afternoon, with weekend adventures.

  • Duke would love an easy going dog brother or sister, but doesn’t require it. Some neighborhood dog friends would be great, but he’s not a dog park dog. Just too much chaos for this easy going dude.

  • Duke needs someone who is home more often than not. He is in love with all humans. So someone who works from home who wants a foot warmer (aka Duke) would be ideal.

  • Duke needs someone committed to crate training for bedtime and when the house is empty. We’ve worked really hard on his separation anxiety, and created a positive association that the crate is his den, so it’s important the adopter continue with the foundation we have set.

  • Duke’s teeth are not in the best shape. Eventually, he might need to have the teeth pulled, but our vet recommend waiting until they require it.

  • Because of the heart worm treatment, Duke was on limited activity for nearly 6 months. The adopters will need to be committed to helping Duke lose about 10-15lbs to ensure he doesn’t have problems from being overweight. The weight will come off naturally with regular routine and walks, and with a little assistance from a lower calorie diet. Just limit the scraps from the table for this guy!

  • Medically speaking, Duke is cured of heart worm, so aside from monthly heart worm preventative (what all dogs take monthly), he needs nothing else.

  • Most importantly, Duke needs love and structure. It’s a balance of both that will bring out his true potential.

Crate/Potty Training

All puppies and dogs rescued by FAVOR are crate trained, sleeping in the crate from 9pm-6am, and accustomed to some day crate time as well. Puppies also understand the basic concept of peeing outside, but there is ALWAYS a transition period where crate cries and potty accidents WILL HAPPEN in a new home, as the dog transitions to new rules and ways to communicate.

We always recommend keeping dogs crated during nap times, bed time, and when they are alone to protect them from danger such as chewing on cords, socks, and other objects. Foreign objects can get stuck in their stomachs which can result in a very expensive surgery. We also encourage using the crate like a bedroom for your dogs as they get older, where they can take naps, take a break from human interaction, and have a time out. More importantly, the crate provides them a safe place to go to when things get overwhelming, like a lot of people, loud noises, extreme weather. Think of the crate as their “den,” and a place for them to unwind. We all need a break sometimes!

Vetting

All dogs rescued by FAVOR are:

  • Spayed/Neutered

  • Microchipped
