Meet the Puppy

August was found on the side of the road with pregnant Ivy of the College Canines. He was a little skittish at first, and was not too sure on how to be a dog. He has thrived in both foster care and training. We call him the gentle giant. He’s playful, happy, loving, with a heart of gold, but he still has his quirks. Auggie has been in New England since OCTOBER, and we hope this heart of gold finds his way home for the New Year!

Temperament

Auggie is a hoot! He’s got such a special personality of sweet and goofy, but he’ll make you work for it. He’s a shy and sensitive soul at first, who does take him some time to show his true colors. Once he does, he’s the biggest love bug, borderline clingy best friend. Ultimately, he just needs some time to acclimate to new situations. The crate is his safe spot, and he loves spending his time there to nap, sleep, decompress, and in new situations, hide all day. His adopter needs to be okay letting him do that, and finding that balance of taking him through new experiences and exposing him to the good in the world, and giving him space to unwind and snooze through the stress of something new. When it comes to new experiences, we would best describe Auggie as someone who loves to watch the world go by and is even curious about it as it does, but wants little attention in return.

He loves to play with the dogs, and he is extremely curious and gentle with the puppies. He loves human attention once he gets to know the humans, but first meet he tends to be nervous and aloof which is why potential adopters keep passing on this tender heart after they meet him. He also has a ridiculous under bite to match his personality.

Auggie has spent some time with our southern trainer prior to her arrival up north. We REQUIRE that Auggie works with one of our recommended northern trainers, implementing a balanced training method. We have already started the foundational work of balanced training using a prong and Educator remote collar as communication tools (not corrective tools). He has thrived in this type of training! The first session is covered by us! Our recommended trainers will continue to work on confidence, and get ready for off-leash fun.

Those not willing to continue this type of training, need not apply, and those with prong/remote collar experience are preferred!

Needs

  • Auggie needs a consistent daily routine. He’ll thrive in an environment that consists of the same walk every morning, the same trail in the afternoon, with an occasional weekend adventure. He’s not the dog that’s going to love hanging at the brewery. He’ll do it, but he’ll just sit there like a statue and observe. He IS the dog whose tail will wag so hard when you get home, you’ll think his crate is going to fall over.

  • Auggie needs a slow paced family. He’s not a marathoner, in fact, he is a little on the lazy side. He’ll walk with you as long as you want, but if you cut a walk short, he won’t hold it against you. Just be sure to repay him in pets and cuddles.

  • Auggie needs a quiet household without a lot of coming and going. He is NOT at all aggressive. It’s more that he’s anxious with new people he doesn’t know, and he’ll bolt into his crate. While we don’t find this behavior alarming, we have noticed that potential adopters find this to be behavior stressful for them. So rather then mismatch Auggie or cause stress on the humans, we’d love a quiet home.

  • Auggie needs a home with no kids under 12. Again, he is NOT aggressive, kids just naturally have a lot of hustle and bustle to them. We know he would do so well in a more laid back home.

  • Auggie needs a home where you put away your shoes. He likes to quietly steal cozy slippers and gnaw on them.

  • He needs a home with ear plugs, he snores like an old man.

  • Auggie would love a fenced back yard! He loves to be outside, sunbath when appropriate, but most of all, he just likes to prance around, like a horse! He’s a loyal lassie, so we are not afraid he’d escape for no reason, but more that if something suddenly spooked him, he might run off and get lost.

  • He would love a well behaved dog friend in the home, or in the neighborhood. While this is not required, we do know he gains a little confidence around other dogs. With that said, he is currently fostered without dogs, and is also thriving.

  • Auggie needs someone who can look beyond his shy first impression. Auggie is easy in so many ways. He’s not high energy, he loves his crate, he’s so mild tempered, but he’s just a bit socially awkward at first.

  • Most importantly, Auggie is a dog who needs patience, love, as well as some tough love to get him over some fears. It’s a balance of affection and structure that will bring out his true potential.

Crate/Potty Training

All puppies and dogs rescued by FAVOR are crate trained, sleeping in the crate from 9pm-6am, and accustomed to some day crate time as well. Puppies also understand the basic concept of peeing outside, but there is ALWAYS a transition period where crate cries and potty accidents WILL HAPPEN in a new home, as the dog transitions to new rules and ways to communicate.

We always recommend keeping dogs crated during nap times, bed time, and when they are alone to protect them from danger such as chewing on cords, socks, and other objects. Foreign objects can get stuck in their stomachs which can result in a very expensive surgery. We also encourage using the crate like a bedroom for your dogs as they get older, where they can take naps, take a break from human interaction, and have a time out. More importantly, the crate provides them a safe place to go to when things get overwhelming, like a lot of people, loud noises, extreme weather. Think of the crate as their “den,” and a place for them to unwind. We all need a break sometimes!
