Temperament
When we think of Tucker, we think of Sully and Mike Wazowski from the Disney film, Monster’s Inc. He’s a big, lovable, goofy, clumsy monster like Sully, with a smidge of mopey drama queen like Mike Wazowski. Tucker has be an awesome foster dog, getting along with every dog, cat, and human he meets. He loves attention from all living creatures, human and canine. At the same time, he’s also self entertaining, throwing a toy to himself, running zoomies around the yard, and yodeling to himself.
While his paperwork may say 6 years old, no one told Tucker, because he’s playful, energetic, and goofy. He has a puppy personality in an adult dog body. He’s eager to please and extremely smart. While he’s not a barker or loud, he likes an occasional chat. He likes to talk to you with grunts and groans, or sing a little song.
Tucker does exhibit some signs of crate anxiety. He even figured out how to use his head and paw to push the crate door latch open. We have worked incredibly hard to continue to have the crate be a safe place, crating him overnight and during day naps, but not without a little side eye first. But we are happy to report, he now goes into an open crate on his own for his naps as a way to take a break from the resident pups.
Whoever adopts Tucker, MUST continue to use the crate in his every day life so that he continues to build that trust with it. Why do we believe the crate is so important? If there is every an emergency, if you ever need to board him, if he ever has a procedure done at the vet, he will be crated. All of those occasions are already stressful enough on a dog, we try to avoid the added stress of the crate. If a dog becomes familiar and safe in the crate, the level of anxiety in those situations decreases.
Tucker has had the opportunity to spend some time with our experienced foster prior to her arrival up north. We REQUIRE that Tucker work with one of our recommended northern trainers initially, implementing a balanced training method. WHY? Because we have already started implement the foundational elements of this style of training, and she’s done amazingly well. The first session is covered by us, and our recommended trainers will continue to work on confidence, manners, reliability, and FUN.
Needs
Don’t let his age fool you, Tucker will be best suited to an to an active family or couple, willing to give them regular walks, runs, trails, and adventures, and plenty of playtime. They should continue socialization with other dogs through puppy play dates.
Tucker requires a back yard. Traditional fencing is NOT required.
Adopters should be ready to start PROFESSIONAL training with one of our recommended trainers to continue proper dog socialization, work on nice leash manners using leash pressure, and heel-side walking, structured walking, place command, and prepare for off-leash remote collar fun.
As an organization, we prefer balanced training, and not “purely positive training.” Balanced training strikes a happy balance between a TON of positive rewards, but also rules, structure, and specific tools to set tone and boundaries for our dogs. We are firm believers that the more rules you have for your dog when they are young, the more freedom they earn as they get older. So set down expectations and boundaries for your dog now with a trainer and the right tools, so they can be part of all the family fun! Those with balanced training experience, and experience with slip lead/training collar/prong/remote collar as communication tools are preferred but not required!
Those who don’t believe in rules, routine, and structure for your dog, need not apply.
PLEASE KEEP IN MIND, we will only consider applicants where one adult has a more flexible schedule, as puppies are a lot of work, and will require potty breaks, exercise, training and continued human and dog socialization as they grow up.
Crate/Potty Training
All puppies and dogs rescued by FAVOR are crate trained, sleeping in the crate from 8pm-6am (with a potty break around 11pm), and accustomed to some day crate time as well. Puppies also understand the basic concept of peeing outside, but there is ALWAYS a transition period where crate cries and potty accidents WILL HAPPEN in a new home, as the dog transitions to new rules and ways to communicate.
We always recommend keeping dogs crated during nap times, bed time, and when they are alone to protect them from danger such as chewing on cords, socks, and other objects. Foreign objects can get stuck in their stomachs which can result in a very expensive surgery. We also encourage using the crate like a bedroom for your dogs as they get older, where they can take naps, take a break from human interaction, and have a time out. More importantly, the crate provides them a safe place to go to when things get overwhelming, like a lot of people, loud noises, extreme weather. Think of the crate as their “den,” and a place for them to unwind. We all need a break sometimes!
